DESCRIPTION
The loading position was exposed to tidal movements of 5-6 m combined with current ranging up to 6 kts. It was not possible to get the vessel directly alongside as at low water available draft was less then 4 m. We placed a 17 m wide barge as fender between the vessel and the quay, thereby allowing available draft for the vessel of 6,5 m. To overcome crane outreach problems a 800 T crawler crane was positioned to move the cargo on board of the vessel.
At discharging berth, without protection from open sea, heavy swell prevailed driven by winter weather from the North Sea. To avoid being damaged, the vessel had to be moved to the nearby port of Hammerfest.
Under such circumstances discharging took 8-9 days while it could normally be done within 2 days. Although the circumstances, all cargo was safely discharged, which was priority number 1 on this project.
