The movement of this new construction equipment is from the port of Kobe and Yokohama to Durban with maximum lifts of 50 tons. Each shipment posed some interesting challenges using lift on/lift off self-geared vessels where they usually moved on roll on/roll off vessels. Carefully pre-planning with the stevedores prior to loading and discharge was undertaken to ensure the use of special equipment such as soft slings, cushion paddings and covered wires to minimise direct contact to the machines, thus reducing risk of damage.
